Meet Danni Hickey, the passionate and determined Executive Director of Fraternity House, Inc., a nonprofit providing critical care to low-income individuals living with HIV/AIDS. In just over a year, Danni has made a profound impact, bringing fresh energy and innovative solutions to a historically underserved community.
Expanding Mental Health Services
One of Danni’s biggest accomplishments has been securing funding to provide mental health services to Fraternity House’s residents—individuals who face a combination of HIV/AIDS, homelessness, substance use disorders, and adversity. For many residents, survival has always been the priority, leaving little room to process the nuanced trauma they’ve endured.
The newly acquired funding allows Fraternity House to offer these essential services without burdening sliding-scale clinicians or navigating complex insurance systems. This achievement ensures residents can access the mental health support they deserve, paving the way for healing and stability.
Leadership, Resilience, and Representation
Stepping into the role of Executive Director in their mid-twenties, Danni has faced challenges, including assumptions about their ability to lead at a young age. As a proud, openly LGBTQ+ leader, Danni has not only navigated these obstacles but also embraced opportunities to advocate for other young queer professionals. Through open dialogue and mentorship, Danni is helping others find confidence and direction in their leadership journeys.
A Vision for Growth
Under Danni’s leadership, the future of Fraternity House, Inc. is one of renewed visibility and advocacy. After years without an executive director, the organization now has the leadership and capacity to amplify its voice and address the critical needs of individuals living with HIV/AIDS in San Diego County. Danni envisions an agency that operates more publicly, raising awareness and driving systemic change for the community it serves.
The Value of CALO: Building Connections
Danni describes CALO as a lifeline of community and support: "When I started as Executive Director, one of my board members told me that the job is the loneliest job. CALO changes that. It provides opportunities to vocalize thoughts, talk through ideas, and connect with others who understand the unique challenges of leadership. The space CALO creates is invaluable.”
Danni’s leadership at Fraternity House, Inc. is a testament to the power of resilience, compassion, and bold vision. Their commitment to supporting vulnerable individuals and advocating for their needs is truly inspiring. We’re proud to celebrate Danni with this CALO Member Spotlight!
